I GOT IN ONE LIL…
Since early 2010 the quartet from Chicago has been to hell and back, making the name Madina Lake anything but new to any of us. With bassist Matthew Leone being hospitalised as a result of intervening in a domestic fight while in their home town of Chicago as well as leaving their previous record company Roadrunner Records which had been the backbone to their success since joining in April 2006. Which may have left a question mark to any future plans, however with that being said they’re back fighting with a new record company and Matthew nursed back to health. Madina Lake are back with their third full length studio album and final part in the Adalia mystery, World War III.
Upon first listen you can tell that the band have come a long way since releasing their first album From Them, Through Us, To You five years ago in 2006 and If the opener Howdy Neighbour! is anything to go by then this album is going to be a roller-coaster. With the track obviously being inspired by the bassist’s incident; which no doubt has had a lasting effect on the overall vibe of the track. The music also reflects this angle of the track with guitarist Mateo Camargo and drummer Dan Torelli both doing their bit to further add to the darker side of the usually quite vivid band.
The aggression behind the vocals from lead vocalist Nathan Leone may be a new thing for some fans; since vocals on the previous albums have been anything but aggressive in exception to such tracks as True Love featured on the 2006 debut. Though no need to panic River People, as though the album seems to follow with lyrics and music that is far more bolder and raunchier than previous releases such as Attics To Eden and The Dresden Codex. WWIII at times can be totally adverse with some songs being quite delicate and something you would probably hear on their 2006 debut.
The album itself is full of surprises, with tracks ranging from hard hitting rock tracks such as Imagineer and Blood Red Flags to quite experimental, synth driven tracks such as Heroine and Fireworks. World War III even features a few quite ballad-y tracks such as Take Me Or Leave and We Got This; which features lyrics that could even pull the strings of the most concrete heart. Evidently We Got This is also about the incident that has already inspired the opening track, however unlike the quite turbulent opener this track is a total contrast with much slower guitar riffs and drum beats and features lyrics which suggest the aftermath of the incident from vocalist Nathan Leone’s point of view.Overall like predicted from front to back this album is a roller-coaster. A roller-coaster of emotion, of revenge and without a doubt a process of healing. As well as a farewell to a story which has spun through the past 3 albums. The story of the disappearance of the socialite Adalia composed by bassist Matthew Leone which has inspired the lyrics and questionably the band themselves which now have become adored favourites by fans and musicians alike.
Though what’s next for the band is uncertain not due to the doubt of anything being created after this album. With an album like this there is a certainty that Madina Lake are going to be around for a long time to come but what is uncertain is what the band have up their sleeves to spring upon to us next.
Though whatever may be around the corner for us I’m sure fans will welcome with open arms, that I’m certain about!I’ve been lazy over the summer, so sorry if this is really poorly written. It probably is but I just needed to brush the cobwebs out of my mind. Have a read if you wish. Let me know anything I’ll take them on board next time.
